Building Cultural and Ecologically Sound Economies for our Collective Futures
Welcome to the Traditional Eastern Woodland Foodways Alliance (TEWFA). We are a 501(c)3 grassroots community development corporation (CDC) dedicated to fostering ecological, sustainable, and culturally centered economic development in our traditional Maryland, North Carolina, and Virginia homelands. Our organizations aims to be a CDC hub for tribes, urban Indian organizations, collective American Indigenous communities throughout the Eastern Woodlands.
About
Our Mission
Our organization clearly focuses on revitalizing our rich cultural heritage and protecting the environment, especially through Indigenous foodways. Due to the high level of interest from various communities beyond Virginia Algonquian communities, we have expanded our agenda to include communities across the ethnolinguistic Algonquian, Iroquoian, and Siouan families.
TEWFA recognizes that colonial practices have disrupted traditional Indigenous kinship (see document for more details), which was meant to weaken our ability to thrive. Instead of advocating for a particular policy for tribes to adopt to bring descendants home, TEWFA is an organization where kinship renewal between descendants, citizens, governments, and allies also revitalizes our cultural, economic, and ecological systems, inspiring us all with the power of kinship revival.
